Protected turn phasing occurs when the left or right turns at a signalized intersection are made with no opposing or conflicting vehicular or pedestrian flows allowed. Permitted turn phasing occurs when the left or right turns at a signalized intersection are made against an opposing or conflicting vehicular or pedestrian flow. Protected plus permitted (compound) phasing occurs when both the protected turn phasing and the permitted turn phasing are displayed, or are available to be displayed, over the course of a single cycle to a given lane group.
